The Fortezza di San Giovanni or da Basso (1533 - 1535) was designed by Antonio da Sangallo with inventive features in order to make an attack on the city extremely difficult. During those times, it protected the city from invasion, but nowadays it is home to conferences and exhibitions. One of these is the Florence Gift Mart, which occurs twice a year and lasts for 3 - 4 days. The initiative behind it is to present to the community original objects suitable as gift items. It is an opportunity not to be missed for some very original presents for friends and loved ones. The exhibition prides itself on attracting the most refined designers and creative experts in the field.

Florence hosts no less than five fashion events, which are amongst the most important in the international calendar; Pitti Immagine Bimbo, Uomo, Casa, Filati and ModaPelle. Pitti Immagine's mission is to stage fashion fairs and events in the sense of production-consumption, as well as aesthetic and cultural design. The shows have shifted from fashion as merely a product to fashion as a global lifestyle, as social relations and communication amongst classes, generations and cultures. The shows take place throughout the year, so it is very likely that there will be one taking place, while you are visiting Florence.

Festival Dei Popoli. Address: Borgo Pinti 82/r - Tel: 055 244 778 / Fax: 055 241 364
Website: http://www.festivaldeipopoli.org/festival_eng.htm
The Festival dei Popoli is Florence's main film festival which has both an Italian category, as well as an international one; the festival remains an important part of the Florentine cultural calendar. When it was founded, its leitmotif was to transport its visitors to places far away in terms of both time and distance, i.e. to actually bring the world to Florence. The arrival of the new Millennium has brought many changes and now the world is on Florence's doorstep, due to migration and globalisation.

Biannually since 1997, the Fortezza da Basso hosts the International Arts Biennale in Florence which was founded by the Celona bothers, Pasquale and Piero. It was felt that there was a need for an important international venue, which would make it possible for talented career artists to exhibit their contemporary works in a panoramic survey of contemporary art. The Florence Biennale is uniquely open to expansion and diversity, as participants are chosen without prejudice to style, theme or school. If you are in Florence in December, then you should not miss this chance to experience this fresh new art in a unique ambience.
